Who am I and What do I do?

My name is Toby Ridley and I am an aspiring Video Game developer with particular interest in 3D Modeling. I am currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Game Development at South Essex College.

I create all of my assets in Autodesk Maya. At the time of writing this, I have been formally tutored in Maya for 3 years. Through that process, as well as some self taught exploration of the software and various render techniques, I have developed a style and aesthetic standard that I hold myself to with everything that I produce.

Asset Generation & Presentation

I take great pride in my work and can be very exacting with how something looks when the situation calls for it – which for detailed assets is almost always.

Furthermore, I’m a firm believer in the fact that presentation can make or break a project, which is why I always take extreme care in not only how my work appears objectively but also how the overall look can be affected by different lighting, camera angles and the positioning and placement of the object.

This process allows me to insure that my work looks good and is fit for purpose, no matter how it ends up being used or placed within a scene.

Research and Real-World Reference

When starting a project, I believe that grounding the initial design in already popular themes and aesthetics can thoroughly improve the end product.

For this reason, I always start any design project by taking stock of what I am trying to achieve and then going out and finding real world inspiration that fits the effect that i am trying to emulate; whether that be in developing concepts and blockouts for characters, environments and stories or creating fully detailed assets intended for use in a project.

This process helps me to create a good baseline for my projects that i can always refer back to when making choices on the design of an asset or when looking to improve upon work already done by adding layers of detail that can go a long way into building a story around a seemingly insignificant object that broadens the narrative of the project.
