LEVEL / ENVIRONMENT DESIGNER

– Naughty Dog –


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and model simplified geometry environmental layouts, place game objects, and script level progression
  • Perform extensive level play-testing, reviews, and iteration
  • Collaborate with artists, programmers, animators and other game designers to craft the vision of your levels and the game
  • Act as producer for levels you design, as well as other parts of the game, facilitating communication across disciplines, clearing dependencies, and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Design and champion gameplay systems, conventions, and scenarios 
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed

REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS:

  • Eye for art composition, architectural concepts, and an ability to create evocative shapes
  • Good working knowledge of Maya, 3DS Max, or similar 3D package
  • Understanding of simple scripting/programming concepts using a language such as C#, Lua, Javascript, or Python
  • Proficient and effective communication skills
  • Welcomes criticism and collaborates well as part of a diverse team, innovating without losing sight of the gameplay vision
  • Desire to be a part of a team
  • Preferred: 3+ years designing and scripting single-player levels for console games

3D ASSET ARTIST

Key Responsibilities

  • Create industry leading assets that creatively and technically raise the project’s visual bar.
  • Be comfortable communicating across teams and departments.
  • Self-regulate your workload while completing ad-hoc requests & investigating any issues that arise.
  • Be proactive and pre-empt dependency issues across teams before they happen.
  • Fully understand the project tool chain / game engine and confidently report issues & improvements.
  • Continue to develop the skills of yourself and those around you to maintain a world class quality.
  • Experience in dealing with outsource companies, with an understanding of the pipeline and the material required to support it.

Technical Requirements

  • Hard surface generalist – the ability to handle vehicles, weapons, and complex props.
  • Experience in creating and using assets in level creation tools such as Unreal Engine 4 or similar.
  • At least 1 published games title on current gen platforms.
  • Understanding of baking textures, processing maps and physically based shading.
  • 3DS Max and Photoshop at expert level.
  • Experience of the full asset pipeline including optimising and profiling.
  • Z-brush experience.
  • Familiarity with procedural texture packages like Substance Designer.

Skill Requirements

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working in an environment of honest feedback & iterative design.
  • Functional design and implementation of concept to final asset, and the ability to expand creatively on the given style.
  • A deep understanding of mechanical engineering for complex rigged content a plus.
  • Experience leading a small team or mentoring other artist is a plus.
